Creating a Forest Teahouse on our Pond
The creative process of designing and building a teahouse structure from redwood. The design idea is an interpretation of a Japanese Teahouse with wall and sliding door panels that emulate interlacing branches in a forest. The lumber is sawn redwood I milled from our property along the Pacific coast of Northern California. The structure's wall panels are made of translucent fiberglass and redwood. Myself and Julie built the teahouse over a six month time period. The teahouse borders a redwood forest and overlooks our pond.

    I discovered your video when it first came out and converted my 2007 Prius with a 4.5 kW system. Two years ago, I upgraded the batteries to an 18 kWh Nissan Leaf setup and added solar panels on the roof. I still use my Prius today, and it works perfectly. Thanks for sharing this with us. It's all your fault!

    Great technique, very skilled. My only critique would be, when you first start running the saw down the guide on your cuts, you're kneeling directly behind the saw, and if that kicks back on you for some reason, it could really tear you up. I would think you would want to stand and walk on the side right from the start, running the saw and pushing the 2 by 12 from the top, like you do for the rest of the cut.

    You can usually tell how much experience or research someone has or has done by the nomenclature they use in describing their activity- i suggest that the newbies visit wood web or some other references -- what you are looking at here is "Heart shake" caused by the swaying of the tree in the wind, "crack" is found in the vocabulary of the druggies.

  • @D-train69
    @D-train69 5 місяців тому

    In the cover picture you seem to be working so hard. The Alaskan chain saw mill I suppose has its advantages but the way I've used to cut slabs-lumber is just let gravity do it's thing with the saw and just cut with the tip of the bar. So not to burn the saw up an not using the whole bar and chain to cut with is hard on the saw just to throw power saw dust. When cutting with just the tip you'll have 10 inch long strands of wood for the saw dust. Much easier on the saw and the person running the saw as well.

    Well done broadcast hope you can broadcast some recent videos of your great carpentry skills of the finish builds so we the viewers can dream an$ hope we can build projects like this in our own lands. The Hawaiian Sandal wood trade has decimated the original natural old growth tropical forests in, Hawaii. Now some of the natural Hawaiian Koa Trees have gone on the endangered trees list. Now illegal to harvest just like the, Brazilian Rosewood from Brazil. Your place seems to be well established, you must have moved there in the late, 70’s or early, 80’s era. I didn’t know that, Alaska actually had, Redwood tree species there. Or is that actually, Alaska you live in or another state with, Redwood forests? Last I remember from history the Redwoods were only in, Northern California. Could you give some input on that? I’ve seen other peoples broadcasts with having land and cutting there own trees for building their homes in, Alaska also. But not sure of the tree species. Aloha and Mahalo for your sharing. 🌺🌸🌴❤️🇺🇸

    Thanks for posting! To clarify, you get 70mpg *after* depleting the electric only drive, or is that only if you don't do an all-electric stint? (not sure how the battery pack is integrated into car). First scenario is better of course, but either way, amazing mileage! I have a 2007 (standard, not converted) and get around 40mpg consistently. Do you know if these conversion kits are still available for purchase? I've looked around a bit over the last 5 years but didn't see anything current. If you have a link to one that is, I'd be very grateful to receive info! Thanks!!

    • @DavidGrothsculpture
      @DavidGrothsculpture 6 місяців тому

      To my knowledge these kits are no longer available. The current technology has gone quite far beyond altering a Prius with all electric cars now. Tesla will come out by the end of this year with an electric car for between $20,000 and $25,000. Subtract the federal $7500 and you will have a sub $20,000…close to $15,000

    • @johannabronk721
      @johannabronk721 6 місяців тому

      Thanks! I didn't realize that they were coming out with such an affordable option. There are various reasons I'd probably still be interested in a conversion, one being that I heard (will have to re:check the info) that the amount of energy it takes to go into producing a new car has a higher co2 footprint than keeping your old gas-using car. But thanks for the tip (I don't follow electric/car release info much). @@DavidGrothsculpture

    Sadly, the Oil, Gas, and Energy companies watched this video, and hatched a scheme to ensure even electricity on a par with fossil fuel…no, I know, he’s got a solar panel. The problem is, I’ve realised, the car is the little bit at the end of a rather long road to using electricity to drive with! You can buy an electric car used, not great, but for less than maybe $10k. It doesn’t have to be great, it just has to plug-in. The real money, is for the solar panels, the batteries, etc, to make your electricity in the first place. If you have a home power station, EVs make massive sense, definitely. But if not, a decent Toyota Hybrid is as economical as you can get for the money spent. And, as I have discovered, when you look at getting a load of solar panels on your roof, the first thing they’ll do, is assess your state of rot in your roof trusses etc…this is the trouble, you end up beginning with several grand on a roof, then several grand on a set of solar panels etc, then maybe eventually, you get to the car part. Big EGO (Electricity, Gas & Oil) as I call them, just rules the world, and they call the shots, and they wind up prices for fun. We are literally held to ransom. It is ridiculous that you have to self-fund all your own solar panels, batteries etc, before you can economically drive an EV or similar PHEV or whatever. The whole point of distribution lines, was so it could be generated centrally. If those days are over, we need infrastructure spending galore. And there that will sit in the post-pandemic world. Take care all.

    So far, this is the least complicated method and like attaching the rail to the top instead of the end. I also appreciate the homemade guide on the saw. Some complain about time, but I say the savings are worth it. If time is important, go buy boards.
